Marshall Crenshaw: From Detroit to Stardom
Michigan born Marshall Crenshaw got hooked on music at an early age, tuning his first guitar at ten years old and never looking back. He rose to fame in 1978, playing John Lennon in the Broadway musical “Beatlemania,” first as an understudy in New York, then under the spotlight on the West Coast and eventually on a national tour. In 1980, Crenshaw parted ways with his “Beatlemania” career, and returned to NYC to start a rock band with his brother Robert, and bass player Chris Donato.
Things really took off when Alan Betrock produced Crenshaw’s debut single “Something’s Gonna Happen”. Around the same time, Robert Gordon dropped a cover of Marshall’s “Someday Someway” on the RCA label. Both tracks blew up on New York’s WNEW-FM, and suddenly, Marshall and his band were the talk of the town.
Fast forward four decades, and Crenshaw has released hundreds of songs over 13 albums, snagged Grammy and Golden Globe nominations, and even made appearances in film and TV, playing Buddy Holly in the 1987 film, “La Bamba.” His music is known for its artful, passionate, and meticulously crafted sound, earning him a dedicated fan base and countless live performances.
